meisnerOn July 5, 2017, at the age of 83, Joachim Cardinal Meisner, Archbishop emeritus of Cologne, passed away. Joachim Meisner was born on December 25, 1933. In 1962 he received priest's ordination. In 1980 he was ordained bishop and was entrusted with pastoral care of the Diocese of Berlinin the East Germany. In 1983 he was promoted to the rank of cardinal. In 1988 he was appointed head of the Cologne Archdiocese, which he led until 2014 when Pope Francis accepted his renunciation. Cardinal Meisner was buried in the crypt of the Cologne Cathedral on July, 15, 2017.

 

 

 

 

Cardinal Meisner was a great supporter of the Church in Slovakia and he was a personal friend of František Tondra, bishop of Spiš diocese. He financially supported the construction of the new University Library of Catholic University in Ružomberok, which awarded him by the honorary doctorate in 2011.

 

The academic community in Ružomberok expresses sincere condolences and gratitude for every form of his support for Catholic University. May the Lord reward him and give him eternal peace.
