Professor Pašteka and Archbishop Hrušovský Awarded by the Honorary Degree PDF Print E-mail

RUŽOMBEROK (September 30, 2009) - The Catholic University in Ružomberok awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Cause to Professor Július Paštéka and Archbishop Dominik Hrušovský on September 30, 2009. The ceremony took place on the occasion of the opening of the academic year 2009/2010 at the Catholic University together with the Assembly of the Academic Community and encounter of the Scientific Boards of the university and faculties.

In the words of Tadeusza Zasępa, rector of the university, both of the personalities awarded by the Honorary Degree Doctor Honoris Causa represent all that is the aim of the CU in the society. “Besides education of students, it is especially their tutoring and formation. This effort has been a characteristic sign sinc the origin of the university. We are invited to serve the Truth, Good and Beauty,“ he mentioned.

Professor Július Pašteka, a literary scientist, is an active creator of christian culture who has had merits in raising national and international awareness of Slovakia, our nation, culture, science and belief. “His importance, as a Catholic scientist of arts, consists in his merits in the Slovak cultural sphere through his works, academic activities and life, “ rector explains. Mons. Dominik Hrušovský has belonged to the most importatnt personalities of the Slovak Catholic life within the last decade. “His long-life fight for freedom of the Catholic Church as well as the rights of Slovaks rate him among the Slovak personalities who have had the most significant merit in cultural, religious and national rise of Slovaks,“ rector stated.

CU was established in 2000 and at the beginning had two faculties – pedagogical and philosophical. Two years later it became a public higher education institution. The preceders of CU were a Pedagogical Institute of St. Andrew in Ružomberok of the University of Trnava, later the Catechetical-Pedagogical Faculty of the University of Žilina. There are studying 10 500 students, 6 000 internal and the rest as external form of studies at four faculties – of Education, of Arts and Letters, of Theology and of Health Care of CU. 1 200 new students began the academic year 2008/09.
