Doctoral researcher Štefan Dvorský during a research stay in Barcelona

    30. january 2026
From 1 October to 30 November 2025, I completed a two-month research stay in Barcelona. The main goal was to work at the CRAI Biblioteca Pavelló de la República archive, which belongs to the University of Barcelona and is one of the most important centres for research on the Spanish Civil War and the International Brigades.

During my stay, I examined archival materials for my dissertation Slovakia and the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) and collaborated with the international SIDBRINT project, which documents the fates of volunteers from around the world.

The stay also included participation in the international conference I Congrés Internacional Recerca i memòria de les Brigades Internacionals, held on 30–31 October 2025 at the Faculty of Geography and History of the University of Barcelona. I presented two papers – one on the fates of Slovak International Brigades volunteers Jozef Májek, Ladislav Holdoš, and Peter Kubík, the other on Helena Petránková, who served in the Czechoslovak army after returning from Spain.

The stay allowed me to obtain valuable archival materials and establish contacts with experts from thirteen countries. For my doctoral studies, it was an invaluable experience, and I would recommend this form of mobility to anyone who has the opportunity to participate.

I would like to thank the Faculty of Arts and Letters of the Catholic University in Ružomberok for the financial support.
