Summer school of Catholic universities in Šibenik, Croatia - an unforgettable experience of our seven-member expedition

Students from Catholic universities involved in the Catholic Universities Partnership had a unique opportunity to participate in a summer school in Šibenik. This summer school, focusing on thematic questions related to the war in Ukraine, was organized under the auspices of the Catholic University in Croatia and the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Our students Terézia Vorčáková, Jozefína Nemčíková, Patrik Hrmo, Andrea Magerová, Lucia Mojšová, Laura Jurko, as well as our lecturer, Associate Professor Marian Kuna, also became part of this fascinating event.

When we gathered in the picturesque coastal town of Šibenik, we had no idea of the exciting and enriching experiences that awaited us. However, the summer school with the theme "Practicing Resilience - Preparing for Recovery" turned out to be much more than just an ordinary academic event. It was a time when we experienced a real adventure that brought us not only education but also new friendships and personal growth.

Over the course of ten days, we had the honor of attending numerous interesting lectures from exceptional speakers. The topics we delved into focused on building resilience and inner strength during challenging times, particularly in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Besides us, students from the Catholic University in Ružomberok, this exceptional community comprised students from Ukraine, Georgia, Hungary, the United States, and Croatia.

Perhaps the most valuable aspect of it all was the interaction among the participants. Lecturers and students from different corners of the world came together in one place and formed a unique community. The discussions we had were lively and profound. We shared our stories, opinions, and questions, which helped us open up to new ideas and realize the mutual interdependence and need for unity among us. Together, we laughed, shared our concerns, dreams, and aspirations for a better future. In such a short time, we provided each other with support and felt a strong bond among us.

We touched depths not only during lectures and workshops but also outside of them. The openness and friendship from the lecturers brought us intense experiences. The strong conversations after lectures or during shared meals left a lasting impression on us.

Besides enriching our minds, we also had the chance to explore the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Šibenik. Joint excursions and trips allowed us to discover the rich history of this region. We admired the architecture of churches, strolled through narrow streets of the old town, and enjoyed breathtaking views of the blue Adriatic Sea. We were fascinated by the charm of Croatia.

The summer school in Šibenik truly was an unforgettable experience full of education, cultural discoveries, and international understanding. Each of us takes away something unique, but at the same time, we have realized that we are part of a common journey towards unity. With deep gratitude, we embrace this unrepeatable opportunity and will continue to spread the message of the second edition of this summer school.
