Conference on Plurality and Relativism
In the final year of the VEGA research project no. 1/0354/24, the Department of Philosophy organized a two-day international conference entitled "On Plurality and Relativism in Contemporary Philosophy." On March 3 and 4, 2026, a total of 20 speakers participated in the event, 17 of whom were present in Ružomberok, while 4 participants from the USA, South Africa, Italy, and Slovakia joined online.
The conference focused on issues related to the problem of plurality and multiple perspectives in various fields. However, the main emphasis and most of the speakers focused on plurality or relativism in history. Therefore, the three keynote speakers were philosophers of history. Specifically, on the first day of the conference, Jouni-Matti Kuukkanen from the University of Oulu gave a lecture entitled Pluralism and Relativism Without Nihilism: Practice-Constituted Normativity, and Giuseppina D'Oro from the University of Oulu and Keele University gave a lecture on Why Explanatory Pluralism does not Entail Relativism. On the second day, Aviezer Tucker from the University of Ostrava spoke on the topic Historiographic Knowledge as Expert Knowledge.
Several of the speakers pointed to the problem of multiple perspectives and the threat of relativism that comes with it. However, some speakers argued that plurality does not necessarily bring with it a pernicious form of relativism. The conference program is available here.
The event was organized as part of the VEGA project no. 1/0354/24 Plurality and Relativism in Contemporary Philosophy.
