Education and training of future social workers at the Faculty of Education, Catholic University in Ružomberok (FE CU) has been running since 2004. During this period, Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degree programmes in the field of Social Work were accredited. The current Department of Social Work is a successor of past workplaces where the study and research in social work were carried out.

Former Dean of the Faculty of Education, prof. PhDr. ThDr. Amantius Akimjak, PhD. established the Department of Social Work in Ružomberok in 2004. The Department was part of the Institute of Health and Social Work until 2005.

After that, former Dean of FE CU has established the Institute of Social Sciences in 2005. The Institute consisted of three departments: Department of Social Work, Department of State and Public Administration and Department of Missionary and Charitable Activities. In 2013 all three departments merged into one Department of Social Work.

The Institute of Social Sciences was closed in 2017 and the employees continued their work under the Department of Social Work. The role of the department is to provide pedagogical, scientific and research activities in the field of Social Work and its related sciences.

The Department of Social Work develops new activities enhancing research potential and international cooperation. As one of the few departments of FE CU, it offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degree programmes.

Within the Master’s degree, students can also choose from these specializations: Public Administration and Social Services, Counseling and Social Communication and Career Counselling and Preparation for Labour Market. The quality of education is also evidenced by the fact that students from the Department of Social Work regularly receive awards from the Slovak rounds of university scientific activities.
