Our student from Department of Mathematics placed second in Czech-Slovak Student Scientific Activity (SSA)

The Czech-Slovak round of SSA in the Didactics of Mathematics took place online on 11. and 12. June 2021. The organizer was the Department of Mathematics and Didactics of Mathematics, Faculty of Education, Charles University, Prague, under the supervision of prof. RNDr. J. Novotná, CSc. A total of 47 students participated. The Ružomberok Department of Mathematics was represented by Lucia Mahútová (Podstrelená) with a work entitled Statistical Literacy as a Part of Education and Culture of Society (the trainer was RNDr. Lucia Csachová, PhD.). In the competition of 14 texts in the diploma category for the 2nd and 3rd level of education, she won a silver award.

The aim of her work was to point out the social intersection of statistical literacy and to propose tasks aimed at increasing it among high school students. It offered the reader the opportunity to get acquainted with a comprehensive view not only of statistics as a scientific discipline and its use, but also to define the concept of statistical literacy and a description of its levels. The practical part was devoted to a detailed qualitative analysis of solving the tasks of respondents from the questionnaire survey, in which the author used not only the model of statistical literacy according to Israeli researcher I. Gala, but also relied on hierarchization of subject levels based on the results of Australian researchers R. Callingham and J. Watson.

The work is especially valuable for pedagogical practice. All the proposed tasks focused on problems that could be said to be “attractive” for high school students and easily included in the subjects of geography, biology or civics.
