Catholic University in Ružomberok Opens 2025/2026 Academic Year During Anniversary Celebrations

On Thursday, September 25, 2025, the Catholic University in Ružomberok commemorated the 25th anniversary of the university's founding. This was attended by prominent Church representatives, rectors of Slovak and foreign universities, representatives of the Slovak Republic, the President of the Žilina Self-Governing Region, representatives of the local government, supporters and, last but not least, students.

The CU anniversary celebrations began a day earlier, when the university organized a conference on the importance of Catholic education in the contemporary world. This was followed by a concert of university choirs and ensembles in the Ružomberok Synagogue.

The largest university celebrations were scheduled for Thursday. In the university church of the Holy Family near the campus, the Veni Sancte Mass was celebrated, celebrated by Dominic Cardinal Duka and concelebrated by the Apostolic Nuncio Mons. Nicola Girasoli, the Bishop of Spiš Mons. František Trstenský and the Chairman of the KBS (also the Grand Chancellor of CU) Mons. Bernard Bober.

After the Mass, the participants in the celebrations moved to the St. John Paul II Auditorium, where a ceremonial assembly of the academic community took place. During it, a speech was given by the President of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini, in which he described the university as extremely important in today's world. This was followed by speeches by the rector, the apostolic nuncio and the bishops present. We will discuss the speeches in a separate article.

Immediately after the nuncio's words, a letter was read from the Holy Father Leo XIV, who connected remotely with the university and wished it and all its employees, students and supporters much strength in fulfilling its mission.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Catholic University in Ružomberok, the university's rector Jaroslav Demko presented the symbolic 25 CU Commemorative Medals. These were intended for people and institutions that have made a significant contribution to the development of the university. We will discuss the medals in a separate article.

The Catholic University has thus entered a new chapter. All the best to CU!
