Karl Mühlek left us at the age of 94

It is with great sadness that we received the news that Karl Mühlek, a prominent theologian and co-founder of the KU, left us forever on February 15, 2025.
Karl Mühlek left us at the age of 94

Dr. Karl Mühlek was born in 1930 in the German city of Röttingen. From 1948 to 1953, he studied theology in Würzburg. He was ordained a priest in 1953. In 1957, he was appointed teacher of religion at the seminary in Schweinfurt. On January 1, 1961, he was appointed subregent at the Episcopal Seminary in Würzburg. From 1969, he worked at the Pedagogical University in Würzburg, where he was awarded the title of Doctor of Theology in 1972. In his dissertation, he devoted himself to the life's work of the theologian Herman Schell. During his time in Würzburg, Dr. Mühlek served as the dean's youth pastor and spiritual advisor to the Catholic Teachers' Association.

Dr. Karl Mühlek worked at the University of Passau since 1974, where he was appointed extraordinary professor for religious education and catechesis. From 1983 to 1985 and from 1993 to 1995, he was dean of the Catholic Faculty of Theology at the University of Passau. As one of the founders of the University of Passau, he was a member of the university senate for many years.

After completing his university service in Passau, he worked for several years as a visiting professor at the Catholic Faculty of Education of St. Andrew of the University of Žilina in Ružomberok, which was the workplace that preceded the establishment of the Catholic University of Ružomberok.

Students and colleagues remember him as a theologian who was always student-oriented. His goal was to inspire them to implement a corresponding contemporary religious education.

In 2010, Mons. Univ. Prof. Karl Mühlek was awarded the CU Gold Medal. He received this important university award for his assistance and significant educational activities at the Faculty of Catechesis and Pedagogy in Ružomberok and later at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Catholic University in Ružomberok, and for building permanent contacts between the KU and the University of Passau.
