Crossing borders between countries, scholars, and genres:
    Event at PPCU

Venue:  Rm 112 in PPCU Sophianum (Mikszáth Kálmán tér 1., Budapest)

Check out the location of the Sophianum building here.

This page gives some info about:

    1. The conference venue
    2. Your hotel (if your stay is funded from our project)
    3. How to get around in Budapest
    4. Pre-conference dinner (on 28 Nov)

    1. The conference venue

The venue is the Pest building of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at PPKE/PPCU university, in the centre of the city, 1 Mikszáth tér ("Sophianum", Floor 1, Room 112), close to the National Museum and the campus of ELTE University (and just a few steps away from Károli Gáspár University, for that matter), with excellent facilities nearby and all the public transport one can ask for (incl. metro line 3 ("Kálvin tér"), metro line 2 ("Astoria" or "Blaha Lujza tér") and tram no. 4-6 ("Harminckettesek tere")).

    2. Your hotel

We have made reservations for our participants at Danubius Hotel Erzsébet (H-1053 Budapest, Károlyi utca 11-15.). You can reach it easily from Ferenciek tere metro station (M3 = "the blue line") or Astoria metro station (M2 = "the red line"), and this is how you get from the hotel to the conf venue:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/Rot8Nr8UBGf1tAoZ7 (an 11-min walk). You'll be able to check in by referring to the reservation made by KU in your name.

    3. How to get around in Budapest

(Click the metro lines map for larger image.) Public transport in the city centre is affordable, fast and efficient, and a single ticket costs 450 HUF (a little more than 1€). However, ticket controls are frequent: ticket controllers (wearing an official armband and a special ID to identify them) may show up randomly in any vehicle or at any metro station. The best is to always have your tickets at hand: either buy them in a 10-piece block (4000 HUF) or buy a travelcard. Single tickets have to be validated whenever you board a vehicle*, while travelcards are more convenient because their validity starts when you purchase them, so all you have to do is keep them on you and show them to the ticket controller if they stop you. (*Except for the metro: there, the ticket is valid for the whole trip, even if you change lines as you go.) We recommend that, as soon as you arrive in Budapest, you find a ticket vending machine and, depending on how much sightseeing you'll have time for, buy a few single tickets, or a 24-hour (unlimited travel for 2500 HUF) or a 72-hour (unlimited travel for 5500 HUF) travelcard.

Ticket vending machines are everywhere in tram stops and at metro station entrances, and you can pay either in cash or by card. Check out tickets and passes (and how a vending machine looks :) ) here, and prices here.

As for sightseeing: you may not have too much time to spend in Budapest, but perhaps the one (seasonal) attraction you should visit is the Christmas Market at St. Stephen's Basilica, voted Europe's most beautiful Christmas market four times in a row.

    4. Pre-conference dinner (on 28 Nov)

We've booked a table from 6pm on Thursday 28 Nov at Tilos a Tilos in Mikszáth tér (that corner of the brown building on the right of the photo below that's covered behind parasols and dining benches). All are welcome for a friendly get-together (and a pre-conf testing of the route to the conf venue :) ).
