Abstract: This paper offers an overview of research on sociolinguistic variability in sign languages, focusing on Slovak Sign Language as used by the deaf community in Slovakia. It presents examples of lexical variability in sign languages, including Slovak Sign Language. It examines their relationship to social factors such as the age of the sign language user, region of origin, educational background, nationality, religion, and stylistic factors – specifically, the register of the sign language users. This paper serves as an initial exploration into the collection of linguistic data on Slovak sign languages, which exhibit variability based on the social context within the community of sign language users.

Keywords: Sociolinguistics. Slovak sign language. Variability. Age. Region. Register.
