Abstract: This study provides a schematic historical view of Roman Catholic education in the Slovak countryside in the first half of the 20th century. In Gaboltov, there was a Roman Catholic folk school founded in the 19th century that taught all grades in one class. As the community grew demographically, it was necessary to provide suitable space for divided teaching. The old school building was not sufficient and alternating classes were no longer possible. It was necessary to ensure the construction of a new school which would provide teaching in two separate classes. The state authorities and the bishop of Košice urged the church community to build a new, suitable school building. Unfortunately, they had no finances nor any understanding to build a new building. Finally, after many problems and misunderstandings, it managed to build a new school that would meet the requirements. This study also focuses on the problems and difficulties associated with maintaining the school during the global economic crisis, as well as the associated feelings of the village population. The study also emphasizes the crucial role of Bishop Čársky in preserving the Roman Catholic school in Gaboltov.
