Abstrakt/ Abstract: Joy is an important element in every authentic letter of Saint Paul. This article focuses on the analysis of the theme of joy and its theological message in the Epistle to the Romans in which joy is a rather neglected subject. The terminology of the joy (forms of the Greek substantive χαρά and of the verb χαίρω) occurs seven times in the Romans. The article pays attention to the exegesis of each of these terms in their immediate context. On the basis of exegesis, inherent characteristics of joy can be found in the epistle: joy is in a close relationship to hope, to love, to peace and to God´s will. This joy originates from the Holy Spirit. Last but not least, this joy is one of the characteristics of a good life and of the kingdom of God.
