Abstract: Two poems from Statius' Silvae (1.3 and 1.5) are exceptional in several respects in the context of Latin literature of the Roman imperial period. In the first case, Statius praises the country villa of his friend Manilius Vopiscus, located in the pleasant climate of Tibur. In the second work, he admires the private baths of Claudius Etruscus, located right in Rome, during the reign of Emperor Domitian. In both poems, for the first time in the history of Greco-Roman literature, it was an undisguised praise of the wealth and luxury of private residences and their surroundings. The poet celebrates not only the rich decoration and inventory of residences, but also technological conveniences, such as water pipes in every room, or the extraordinary layout of buildings, using natural elements for the greater comfort of the owners and their guests. In this article, I reflect on the historical, cultural and philological context of both poetic works. The main goal of the article is to make the poems accessible to Slovak readers through a modern translation, since no other Slovak translation is known so far.
