Abstract: Leonard Cox (c. 1495 – c. 1550) is one of the significant figures of humanism and the Renaissance in Hungary and Poland. The period of his activity overlaps with the early stages of the Reformation in Poland and Hungary, and later with the adoption of institutional Reformation in England. In Slovak and Hungarian historiography, Cox has traditionally, but erroneously, been regarded as a reformer and promoter of the Reformation in Hungary. While Cox did eventually become a supporter of the Reformation, this occurred only in the final years of his life in England. During the time he worked in Poland and Hungary, he rejected and criticized the Reformation. In this study, I analyze Cox’s relationship to the Reformation, his interactions with church leaders, and his overall attitude toward religion.
Keywords: Leonard Cox. Humanism. Renaissance. Reformation. Hungary. Poland. England. Religion. Church history.
