Abstract: A quarter of the mentions of joy in Philippians are found in two verses 2:17-18. This fact raises the question of whether this has any meaning or is just a useless accumulation of words. This study seeks to find an answer to this question in terms of context and analysis of relevant verses that point to the interrelationship between sacrifice and joy. The terminology of joy in 2:17-18 is not just a superfluous pleonasm, but has its significance in terms of context, analogy with Old Testament worship, rhetoric, and emphasis on the basic themes of the letter, which are joy and togetherness.
