Abstrakt/ Abstract: Reading science should be based on a continuously developing evidence base based on the scientific method. Decades of basic research and randomized controlled trials of interventions and instructional practices have created a vast empirical base that provides guidance for best practices in reading instruction, reading interventions, and early identification of students at risk for reading difficulties. Nevertheless, questions about what constitutes reading science resurface repeatedly, leading to misinformation in the public sphere and the misperception of interdisciplinary consensus as differing scholarly opinions. The aim of this article is to critically reexamine reading science from an epistemological perspective, defining what constitutes evidence in reading science, a systematic review with strong evidence, promising findings, or limited empirical support. We also discuss promising areas of research that could advance the science of reading forward and ensure effective support for the development of reading competencies for all students, including inclusive and individualized approaches, emphasizing a cumulative, evidence-based, and methodologically robust approach.
