Abstrakt/ Abstract: The study examines autobiographical elements in Slovak prose after 1989, a period marked by a growing plurality of poetics and a stronger focus on the inner world of the literary subject. It reflects the shift from traditional definitions of autobiography toward modern theoretical approaches that blur the boundaries between reality and fiction and emphasize the genre’s openness. In the Slovak literary context, autobiographical and autofictional strategies appear across generations, and their identification requires analysing narrative procedures and configurational features rather than a simple overlap between author and protagonist.
The analytical section focuses on the poetics of Ivana Dobrakovová, who creates a coherent fictional world built on fragmentation, introspection, and the portrayal of psychologically vulnerable protagonists. Autobiographical aspects in her work do not stem from recounting factual events but from transforming personal experience, emotional intensity, linguistic insecurity, and the context of migration into fictional narratives. Intertextuality, recurring motifs, and the repetition of typified characters form a network in which the personal and the literary continually intersect.
The study demonstrates that autobiographical writing in contemporary Slovak prose functions as a dynamic principle of shaping the literary subject rather than as a fixed genre category. The example of Dobrakovová’s work confirms that personal experience can be transformed in multiple literary ways, while the boundary between reality and fiction remains open and productive.
