Abstrakt/ Abstract: In 1490, the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus died. He was a ruler whose name is written in capital letters in the history of medieval Hungary. As is well known, he was successful in his efforts to defend his rights to the Hungarian crown, yet after his death these rights could not be transferred to his descendants, since he died without a legitimate male heir. Before his death, he sought to secure the succession of his illegitimate son, John Corvinus, but the course of events unfolded differently. The struggle for the Hungarian crown then involved three other contenders: Maximilian of Habsburg, John Albert, and Vladislaus Jagiellon. The victor among them was Vladislaus II Jagiellon. Nevertheless, the fight for the throne continued. To defend and maintain the royal crown, Vladislaus had to rely on the support of the Hungarian nobility and on several capable officials and prelates, among whom was the then royal chancellor Thomas Bakóc. The later Archbishop of Esztergom and cardinal thus became one of the most important pillars of the new king’s rule, standing faithfully by his side during the political and diplomatic struggle for the crown and remaining loyal to him until Vladislaus’s death in 1516.
