Abstrakt/ Abstract: Ján Valentini’s Elegia de Thermis Stubnensibus (1798) constitutes a laudatory account of the thermal springs of Štubňa, known today as Turčianske Teplice. The poem incorporates topoi characteristic of the laus urbis genre, as depicted by Menander Rhetor, who lived at the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. This study identifies these topoi and examines the extent to which Valentini’s elegy conforms to the criteria defined for ancient city encomia, considering whether the text may be legitimately situated within the laus urbis tradition. Simultaneously, attention is given to the function of the poem’s numerous references to classical antiquity (particularly Greco-Roman mythology) and to the Bible.
