Abstrakt/ Abstract: Following the author’s long-term and continuous professional reflection on the Second Vatican Council, this article focuses on the issue of conciliar hermeneutics, i.e. hermeneutics of the council and post-conciliar hermeneutics about the council. What – after sixty years – do its legacy and possible relevance amount to? The line followed includes both the question of the epistemology and methodology of the council itself and the possibilities of current understanding, which should go beyond mere passive receptivity and formal reference to the conciliar texts. Particularly the following aspects are the subject of attention: orientation to the contemporary world and how the council is interwoven with the times; the council as a venue for mutual communication; the connection of the texts and their interpretation to hermeneutic pre-understanding; the risk of ideologizing interpretations. The key to conciliar hermeneutics is the self-definition of the council as pastoral, which is understood as theological – as part of the faith expressed by the council. Although the specific contemporaneous problems which the council reflects upon are no longer relevant today in the same way, the rehabilitation of the secular world and the legitimacy of a social-scientific perspective in theology have proven to be turning points of timeless validity.
