Abstrakt/ Abstract: This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the theoretical foundations of motor abilities, motor skills, and motor competencies within the context of pre-primary and primary education. It analyses their definitions, structure, classification, and developmental characteristics, while emphasizing the interrelation of these categories within the process of motor learning. The contribution highlights the significance of biological, cognitive, sociocultural, and environmental determinants influencing children’s motor development. Special attention is given to the relationship between motor competencies and a healthy lifestyle, as well as the need for systematic diagnostics and targeted pedagogical intervention in early childhood. The paper thus offers a theoretical framework for understanding the role of motor development in educational settings and its implications for the quality of physical education.
