Abstrakt/ Abstract: The study deals with the difference in interpretations of the significance of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) from the perspective of church history. For some, the council is merely a pastoral synod with a few outdated recommendations, which is mistakenly interpreted as a metadogma in light of which the entire tradition of the Church should be interpreted. Others consider it a missed opportunity to reform the Catholic Church. The first part of the study shows that councils usually create a new layer of tradition and are sometimes an effective tool for paradigmatic changes. But in this case, the Catholic Church lives institutionally and structurally much more in the paradigm of the First Vatican Council. This is demonstrated in the second part, which points to how little of the legacy and ambitions of the Second Vatican Council has been implemented. In the third chapter, the author comments on the possibility of convening another council, where he talks about the need for reforms of the institutional power structure of the Church, and sees greater potential in the synodal process. The study concludes that many things have become obsolete 60 years after the Second Vatican Council, but that completing the debate on it seems to be a necessary condition for finding a viable path for the Catholic Church to move and act in the contemporary world.
