Abstrakt/ Abstract: In teaching, we use portraits as a visual aid to naturally bring historical figures closer to students. Portraits serve to illustrate their character, and the distinctive facial features help memory associate and relate to specific individuals. Sometimes portraits are authentic, stylized, representative, or even fictional, yet they always carry a historical expression. In our contribution, we will focus on shaping the history of a noble family through portraits. The portrait gallery of the Zay family is remarkable not only for its scope but also for the questions it raises about the objectives of its systematic creation in the 19th century.
