Abstrakt/ Abstract: The paper focuses on the perception of a leader in the school environment through the eyes of teaching staff. The theoretical part presents the basic approaches to leadership, its development, and modern concepts such as authentic and positive leadership as well as distributed leadership. Special attention is given to the professional competencies of school leaders as defined in current standards. The empirical part presents the results of a survey conducted among 68 teachers, aiming to identify whom they consider a leader, what qualities they attribute to that person, and their interest in taking on a leadership role. The findings show that the school principal is most often perceived as the leader, while respondents emphasize the importance of communication, expertise, the ability to motivate, and empathy. Most respondents expressed interest in a leadership role, indicating the need for systematic support for the development of leadership skills in schools.
