Abstrakt/ Abstract: Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, a prominent social reformer and founder of educational institutions, was one of the most influential representatives of pedagogical thought at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The valuable views of the Swiss educator were shaped by folk wisdom, the work of J. J. Rousseau and the ideas of the Enlightenment, which fundamentally influenced the development of European pedagogy. The aim of the contribution is to analyze the political and social conditions of the time that influenced his pedagogical thinking and practical activities in the field of education. The content of the contribution is based on a qualitative research approach with an emphasis on the content analysis of historical sources and text documents. The comparative method allowed us to compare Pestalozzi's ideas with the contemporary context of Switzerland, Europe and the currents of thought of the Enlightenment. We identified the influence of social and historical events that shaped Pestalozzi's pedagogical ideas. The Enlightenment provided him with a philosophical foundation built on the ideas of equality and freedom, the French Revolution influenced his view of social change, and the reality of Swiss poverty motivated him to selflessly help homeless children.
