Abstrakt/ Abstract: The article presents the fundamental problems concerning development of the idea of self-education from John Amos Comenius to the second half of the 20th century. It was during this period that fundamental postulates of lifelong self-education developed. Initially, these were theoretical reflections on the possibilities of acquiring practical knowledge useful in everyday life. Much changed in the 19th century when rational self-education guidelines emerged in the pedagogical reflection of the time. The article highlights the great importance of the publication of the Guide for Self-Teaching, which created new learning opportunities for illiterate people. Poland's regaining of independence in 1918 provided new conditions for development of the theory and practice of self-education. At that time, new demands for grassroots work on lifelong learning emerged, which involved the formation of andragogical knowledge. Specific features characterised the period of the Polish People's Republic, which brought new ideas in the field of permanent education.
