Abstrakt/ Abstract: In this study, the author provides an analysis of the state of education when Slovakia was part of two political entities—the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Czecho-Slovak Republic. Changes originating in Vienna were positive; in the newly established schools, instruction was conducted in the language of the majority population of the given region. Problems began following the so-called Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 when Magyarization began. In the second part, the author analyzes the development of education in Czechoslovakia, where the Ministry of Education sought to unify the republic’s educational system. However, the Prague government exploited this to fight against the Church, which enjoyed significant popularity in Slovakia, and there was the so-called Kulturkampf. However, strong resistance from the faithful and the hierarchy followed. The article concludes with an analysis of the education system in the First Slovak Republic, where the government declared that it would do its utmost to ensure that relations between the state and the Church were characterized by fruitful cooperation. Special attention was paid in the Slovak school system during that period to the patriotic and national education of schoolchildren, and church-run education experienced a period of flourishing.
