Abstrakt/ Abstract: The March Laws of 1848 extended both active and passive political rights to the more prosperous strata of the peasant population and created the conditions for the entry of previously politically passive groups into public life. Within a relatively short period, peasants, artisans, and merchants began to participate in political processes, while their politicisation was significantly accelerated by conflicts with the county nobility over the character of the social and property transformations that followed the abolition of serfdom. The distribution of land, the use of forests and pastures, regalian rights, and the interpretation of the new legal norms became central issues. Politicisation thus involved not only a growing interest in public affairs, but also the efforts of local authorities to participate directly in the exercise of power and to advance their own social and political interests.
Using the example of Matej Frniak (1801–1900), the long-serving mayor of Liptovská Porúbka, the study analyses the factors that shaped the political socialisation of the rural population in the pre-March period, during the Revolution of 1848–1849, and in the era of neo-absolutism. Particular attention is paid to the tensions between traditional and emerging forms of loyalty and to the role of nationalism in the mobilisation of rural society. In Upper Liptov, confessional identity among the predominantly Lutheran population, a developed school system, and social networks connecting the Slovak Protestant community constituted important factors that created favourable conditions for the circulation of political and national ideas.
After completing his military service, Matej Frniak emerged as a local authority figure as early as the 1830s. During the revolution, he briefly served in the county administration, joined the Slovak volunteer corps, and became a member of the deputation sent to the emperor in Olomouc. Following the defeat of the revolution, he organised petitions against violations of the law by county authorities and the nobility, who in turn sought to discredit him. He combined unwavering loyalty to the monarch with support for the Slovak national movement. He gained considerable respect and recognition within nationalist circles, and Emperor Francis Joseph awarded the longserving mayor the Cross of Merit. His life illustrates the transformation of a local municipal representative into a significant agent of political mobilisation and national engagement among the rural population.
