Abstrakt/ Abstract: Sacral furniture fully supplements the interior of churches, performing not only a practical, but also a decorative and religious function. Furniture is also unique evidence of historical, religious and cultural development. Adding new inventory or replacing old inventory with newer pieces reflects the specific requirements of the age, or the donor or a specific religious community.
The Liptov Museum keeps in its collections a wide range of items of equipment, mainly from Liptov churches, which captures a wide period from the end of the 15th century to the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries. These have been presented in recent decades as part of the permanent exhibition "Sacral Art". This exhibition will be reinstalled in the near future, providing the opportunity to update it.
The article brings an analysis of sacred furniture in the museum's collection as a source for knowledge of the religious development of the region. Within the period studied, from the beginning of the 15th century to the end of the 18th century, the author demonstrates to what extent the construction of new churches, the Reformation and the subsequent Counter-Reformation had an impact on the emergence and development of furniture in the Liptov region. He also contrasts these findings with general artistic trends and the gradual change of artistic styles. When observing artistic styles, dating, and also the depiction of specific motifs, not only are general trends but also regional specifics are fully identified.
