Why didn't anyone ask the AI? The limits of students using AI when preparing to teach art

Abstrakt/ Abstract: The paper analyzes the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in planning art education lessons and the ability of students to actively use these tools. The study involved primary and pre-primary education students (n=101) who were asked to consult their art preparation with AI and critically assess AI suggestions in relation to their own preparation. A qualitative analysis of interactions with AI revealed students' difficulties in formulating prompts, asking targeted questions, and assessing the artistic potential of topics suggested by AI. AI was primarily used as a consultant on formal aspects of preparation, while didactic and artistic aspects were neglected. One-way communication prevailed instead of using AI as a discussion partner. The text analyzes these limitations and offers recommendations for the development of artistic, didactic, and digital competencies of future teachers.
